There’s no shortage of� who want to save money on hair loss treatment. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) is the leading authority on hair loss medication for online and brick-and-mortar pharmacies.
“While the NABP has a wide variety of hair loss drugs, only finasteride, minoxidil and dutasteride are available on the market,” said NABP Chairman and CEO Tad Grapevine. “The NABP has approved these drugs for use in adult men with male pattern baldness.”
The NABP approved these medications, which include finasteride, minoxidil, dutasteride, and tamsulosin. These drugs are used for two reasons:

The NABP recently approved finasteride for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. It’s the first drug approved for treating hair loss in a non-pharmaceutical format.
“We continue to see increased interest in finasteride for treating male pattern baldness, and in the treatment of hair loss in men,” Grapevine said. “The NABP continues to recommend the use of finasteride, but it also continues to recommend that a physician prescribe it to men with a male pattern baldness to help them achieve and maintain a healthy hairline and to help them regrow hair in the receding hairline.”
“We’ve seen that patients have shown the benefit of treatment with finasteride,” said Grapevine. “The NABP has been working with physicians in several countries and is seeing a lot of interest from patients.”
The NABP is not the only hair loss treatment that the NABP is working on. Other companies that make hair loss medications are also developing their own hair loss drugs.
Other hair loss treatments include minoxidil, used to help thin the hair on the scalp. Minoxidil, marketed as Rogaine, is the only medication that is FDA-approved in the United States for the treatment of male pattern baldness. The drug was approved by the FDA in 2018.
The NABP has approved finasteride, marketed as Propecia, for treating male pattern baldness. Propecia, marketed as Proscar, is an FDA-approved drug for male pattern baldness.
Tamsulosin, marketed as dutasteride, is FDA-approved as an over-the-counter hair loss treatment. Dutasteride is a prescription drug that’s available only through licensed pharmacies.
